At KLR, true learning thrives on engagement, challenge, and dialogue. In our Dental Careers class, a recent debate on water fluoridation turned a hot topic into a skill-building powerhouse. As Mr. Rynard and Mr. Flores stress, "Mastering dentistry's tools is key, but researching, debating, and listening prepares you for real-world decisions."
In education today, students with critical thinking, teamwork, and persuasion skills aren't just exam-ready, they're life-ready. At KLR, debates like this prove our students are gaining that edge.
What Are Classroom Debates, and Why Do They Matter?
Debates involve researching and defending viewpoints, honing evidence-based reasoning and respectful discourse. They turn passive lessons into active ones, making knowledge stick.

In dentistry, debating topics like fluoride mirrors professional scenarios, explaining evidence to patients or collaborating on ethics. These skills make the difference, and we embed them daily.
Student Voices: Growth Through Dialogue
Our fluoride debate sparked growth via team prep, research, and rebuttals. Students shared:

"I feel like I learned the importance of sources and seeming credible to the opposing team and spectators. If you don't have sources, you don't seem credible. Also, a lot of debating is just persuading the audience. I don't think adding fluoride is good for us." — Rachel Armstrong, Dental Student, KLR

"I actually learned a lot, making a competition out of learning honestly makes it more fun and makes the new information stick better. My team mates were amazing, we all worked together so well. I also really like public speaking so this was fun for me!" — Brooklyn Moats, Dental Student, KLR

"I personally think that with the groups it helped being able to get different views and have help. The debate helped my understanding on different views. the teamwork definitely helps me with communication. Showed how and what I need to be able to have a good debate." — Lakodah Clevenger, Dental Student, KLR
These insights show debates boost engagement, collaboration, and understanding.
Our Classroom Culture: Designed for Dynamic Engagement
We weave debates into lessons for real-world prep. The fluoride session included timed brainstorming, source gathering from ADA/CDC, argument building, and practice, all fostering efficiency.

This matters because students gain poise, insight, and communication skills, shining in rotations and interviews. Echoing this commitment, KLR's CEO & Founder Katie Reigelsperger shares: “Our responsibility as educators extends beyond clinical competency. We are developing confident, ethical professionals who can think critically, communicate clearly, and work collaboratively in complex environments. Debates challenge students to research deeply, articulate their reasoning with confidence, listen respectfully, and respond with professionalism. At KLR, excellence is the expectation and we intentionally design experiences that strengthen both technical mastery and the soft skills that define exceptional employees.”
Looking Ahead: Debates as Future Foundations
Stepping out of your comfort zone to speak in front of peers on a tough topic is no easy feat, but at KLR, our students prove time and again that "YOU CAN DO HARD THINGS." We're committed to more debates, more challenges, and more growth, equipping you to back points with facts, rebut with respect, conquer difficult discussions, and build the resilience to thrive. Your future is built on bold engagement, and at KLR, you're already proving it.
