A Look Back at Our CPR Skills Events Week

As we begin a new year, we can’t help but reflect on one of our proudest accomplishments from 2024: our CPR Skills Events Week. Over the course of three action-packed days in November, KLR students from all across Indiana explored their passions in healthcare, gained hands-on training, and connected with industry professionals. These events were a true celebration of the bright future of healthcare—and we’re excited to share some highlights with you!

Day 1: Whiteland Community High School (November 19th)

We kicked off CPR Skills Events Week at Whiteland Community High School, where Whiteland senior students dove into preparations for their upcoming rotations. From completing drug screenings and CPR training to striking a pose for professional headshots, these students got a head start on becoming future healthcare professionals.

Day 2: GEO Next Academy (November 20th)

The excitement carried on at GEO Next Academy, where students from GEO Next, Roncalli, and Matchbook Learning came together for an unforgettable day of exploration. Rotating through stations hosted by vendors from a variety of medical specialties, the students engaged in interactive activities designed to spark curiosity and build skills.

Day 3: Hamilton County Fairgrounds (November 21st)

The final day of the week was nothing short of inspiring. Students from Hamilton Heights, Fishers, Tipton, Sheridan, Westfield, Noblesville, Hamilton Southeastern, and Options schools gathered at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds for their annual CPR Skills Event.

A special moment came when the Mayor of Noblesville, Chris Jensen, took the stage to kick off the day. Mayor Jensen welcomed the students with an empowering speech, reminding them that they are the future of our community. He emphasized how vital events like this are for nurturing the next generation of healthcare workers, leaving everyone inspired and ready to learn.

Interactive Activities and Vendor Highlights

Throughout the week, students participated in engaging activities at vendor booths. Here’s a closer look at some of the incredible experiences:

  • Optum: Students mastered pulse oximetry.

  • Riverview Health: Hands-on practice drawing blood, taking blood pressure, and administering injections.

  • PetVet365: Learning animal CPR techniques.

  • Benchmark Physical Therapy: Testing range of motion and balance.

  • Clean Slate: Exploring careers in addiction medicine and conducting urine screenings.

  • Noblesville FD/EMT: Performing CPR, ventilation, and AED use on dummies.

  • Johnson Memorial: Practicing pulse oximetry.

  • IU Ophthalmology: Conducting eye exams.

  • Carmel Fire Department: Demonstrating intubation techniques.

  • Indianapolis Fire Department/Police Force: Introducing students to Maya, a K9 trained to detect the origins of fires, alongside handler Allen Englert.

Our own staff also hosted booths focusing on pharmacy, dental care, veterinary medicine, and soft skills like interview practice.

What the Students Had to Say

The students’ enthusiasm for the event was evident. Here are just a few of the standout quotes:

  • “I enjoyed meeting everyone and I enjoyed talking with people and learning a lot of the different possibilities and positions there can be!” — Miranda Vazquez, Pharmacy Department

  • “This event was great! I love hands-on things. It gets people excited and gives them something to look forward to.” — Addyson Misner, Veterinary Department

  • “Yes, I still am [interested in veterinary medicine], but if I had to change it to one of the other fields and take a job at one of the booths, I would pick the addiction center because I love helping people. I also never thought of this as a possible job, but I found myself pretty interested in it.” — Johnna Watson, Veterinary Department

Why This Matters

For our students, these events weren’t just about completing rotation requirements. They were about discovering new passions, building confidence, and gaining valuable exposure to the many paths within the medical field. We are so proud of each student who participated and can’t wait to see how they will shape the future of healthcare.

Here’s to another year of empowering future healthcare professionals and making a difference together!
