At KLR, we believe that marketing isn’t just about selling products, it’s about understanding people. In our Business Marketing Fundamentals class, students go beyond the textbook to explore what drives consumer decisions, why brands succeed, and how businesses connect with their audience in a competitive market.
I often remind my students that marketing is everywhere, it tells a story, and its success depends on how well your audience remembers that story. That’s why our program focuses on blending creative strategy with real-world application, preparing students for today’s fast-changing economy.
Understanding the Power of Marketing
Marketing impacts nearly every decision we make as consumers, from the phone in your pocket to the sneakers on your feet. In class, students are learning:
How companies identify target markets and understand customer behavior
The four Ps of marketing: product, price, place, and promotion and why they matter
How brands use data and consumer research to make better decisions
The role of social media, advertising, and digital trends in shaping what we buy
We don’t just talk about marketing, we experience it. Students recently explored real-world product campaigns, analyzed industry strategies, and even debated why some businesses succeed while others fail.
Hands-On Learning: Marketing in Action

One of the best parts of the KLR marketing program is putting theory into practice. Through projects, roleplays, and interactive activities, students gain hands-on experience that prepares them for college, careers, and beyond.
For example, this semester, students are working on a project where they take an existing product and improve it, just like real marketing teams do in top companies. They’ll brainstorm new ideas, create promotional strategies, and present their concepts to the class.
These exercises help students:
Build confidence in presenting their ideas
Strengthen their collaboration and problem-solving skills
Learn to think like business professionals
Why It Matters for Their Future
Marketing skills aren’t just for students who want to work in advertising or branding. They teach critical thinking, adaptability, and creativity, traits employers look for in every industry.
By the end of the semester, KLR students will know how to:
Analyze consumer behavior
Build a basic marketing plan
Understand digital and social media trends
Apply the stages of the selling process
These are real-world skills that give them a competitive edge, whether they’re interviewing for their first job, pitching a new idea, or launching their own business one day.
From the Experts: Why Marketing Skills Matter
To bring an industry perspective into our classroom, I recently spoke with Luis Flores Senior Vice President of Revenue Management & e-Commerce at Westgate Resorts, who shared this insight:
“In today’s market, the ability to understand your audience and communicate
effectively is what separates good marketers from great ones. Marketing is attracting and retaining customers, which is essential for business growth.”
Looking Ahead: Creating Tomorrow's Marketing Leaders
The marketing world is constantly evolving and so are we. At KLR, we’re preparing students not just to follow trends, but to create them.
Every campaign they design and every strategy they develop builds the foundation for future success. With creativity, teamwork, and a strong understanding of today’s market, our students aren’t just learning marketing, they’re learning how to make an impact.
Marketing isn’t just about selling products, it’s about creating ideas that inspire action. And remember at KLR, you CAN do hard things!
